A Non-Resident Indian (NRI) is an Indian citizen who resides abroad for employment, business, or other vocational purposes, or who stays abroad under circumstances that indicate an intention to remain outside India for an uncertain duration. This also includes individuals posted in U.N. organizations and officials deputed abroad by the Central or State Governments and Public Sector undertakings on temporary assignments. Additionally, foreign citizens of Indian origin are considered on par with NRIs.

A Person of Indian Origin (PIO) is an individual who, although not a citizen of Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, China, Iran, Nepal, or Bhutan, meets one of the following criteria:

• Has held an Indian passport at any time, or
• Is the child or grandchild of a person who was a citizen of India by virtue of the Constitution of India or the Citizenship Act, 1955.

When purchasing a property, buyers are required to pay several additional charges and taxes beyond the property's price. These mandatory costs include:

• Registration Cost: Fees for registering the property in the buyer's name.
• Stamp Duty: A tax on the legal recognition of documents.
• Service Tax: Applicable on under-construction properties.
• Value Added Tax (VAT): Charged on the sale of goods involved in the construction.
